EAST PEORIA (WEEK) -- Before the state hands out any additional licenses for recreational marijuana businesses, the East Peoria City Council has approved a special use permit to allow a distribution company to expand into the marijuana field.
On Tuesday, the city council voted 4-1 for Sorce Enterprises to operate a marijuana infuser and craft grower business, if alterations are made to the existing structure at 3201 N. Main St.
To achieve the required 1,000-foot separation from a day care facility that is located across the street, Sorce Enterprises said it will demolish a section of the building to allow additional square footage in the back portion, so it ensures it the facility is within the legal length.
The Zoning Board of Appeals voted 5-0 in approval of the proposal.
In the ZBA's recommendation to the council, the new building will be able to expand up to 22,000 square feet, as long as it does not come closer to the day care center.
Although the city approved the permit for Sorce Enterprises, the business will still need to get a license from the state.
The Illinois Department of Agriculture, which oversees the application process and distribution of licenses, released applications January 7.
Craft grower and infuser licenses will be awarded staring July 1.
