HOBOKEN — A local craft fair might be the answer for last-minute shoppers who want to avoid the traffic and lines at the mall.
The Hoboken Historical Museum is holding its 11th annual Holiday Craft Fair this weekend, finishing with a flourish from from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Despite the small space, a number of customers browsed and bought from various craftspeople at the fair.
Right by the entrance was Mary Picard, a vendor at the event who knits and weaves winter accessories like scarves and hats. She said she feels great when people purchase her homemade accessories.
“People seem more interested in handmade gifts,” she said.
Picard, 69, learned how to knit and crotchet from her aunt when she was in grade school. She said she’s happy that she has the skill and that events like Saturday exists to highlight local craftsmanship.
At the end of the walkway was Samanda Rene, an attorney by day, but baker by night.
Rene owns Sam’s Delights, which sells home baked treats like chocolate-covered pretzels, cookies and more. Her hobby started out as event favors for family and friends, but they always told her to start her own business, so she did.
It was Rene’s first time at the fair — and she came down from New York just for it — but she said she didn’t mind the travel and supported the event.
“I love the small business showcase,” Rene said. “I got to meet other vendors.”
Art, home decorations and jewelry were also sold at the fair.
