Ballpark Festival of Beers brings 100-plus craft brews to south Fort Myers - Naples Daily News

The name may have changed, but the beer hasn't.

For the first time, the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels (formerly the Miracle) will host the annual Ballpark Festival of Beers, marking its 15th year. The event is 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday in the concourse at Hammond Stadium.

“It’s more family friendly," said Marshall Kelner, Mighty Mussels broadcast and media relations manager. "There will be games for the children."

Bounce houses and inflatable play areas will be set up. And for the second year in a row, the festival will be during the day, Kelner noted.

For adults, microbreweries from throughout Florida and others parts of the U.S. will serve their crafts, including Kona Brewing Co. from Hawaii.

Southwest Florida brewers will be well represented, including Fort Myers Brewing Co., which is offering its new hard Orange Spyk’d Seltzer with 5% alcohol content.

“We launched it out on draft about four months ago," Fred Malone, Fort Myers Brewing vice president of sales, said of the new seltzer.

"It is zero carbs, zero sugar, no artificial sweetener and it’s 90 calories per a 12-ounce can. It plays toward the active lifestyle.

"Plus, it’s very appealing when it’s 90 degrees outside."

Setlzer fans can enjoy an early taste of the drink, as they won't be available in cans until mid-February with Fort Myers Brewing's other seltzer, strawberry-lime.

The brewery also will serve what it does best, beer, in the form of its Winter Fest Vienna lager.

For craft beer (and now seltzer) connoisseurs, the event offers a unique chance to sample various brands.

“We’ve participated every year," Malone said. "It’s always a very good crowd."

The festival has grown through the years. In 2011, about 75 beers were offered.

For Saturday's festival, patrons will receive a commemorative sampling glass and food will be available for purchase. Guests 21 and older can sample an unlimited number of more than 100 beers.

The offerings vary widely. There's Graffiti Orange from 7venth Sun Brewery based in Dunedin; Voodoo Ranger Juicy Haze from New Belgium Brewing Co. in Fort Collins, Colorado; and the Fort Myers-based Point Ybel Brewing's classic Snook Bite IPA.

Fans of hard seltzer and cider have more than just Fort Myers Brewing's offering to sample, including White Claw Mango and Berry, and Tampa's Cigar City Cider & Mead's Home Made Apple Pie Cider.

The Mighty Mussels also plan to sell gear sporting the team's new logo, which the then-Miracle unveiled late last year.

“There’s a little something for everybody, even if you’re not a beer lover," Kelner said.
